The Ultimate Devotion

I love to write free-form, unstructured poetry. It’s honest; it’s pure; it’s emotive in a way that structured, rhyming stanzas are sometimes not.

I dedicate this free-form to my wonderful husband, D, who has no idea how much I truly appreciate him:

Love

The Ultimate Devotion

He took his wedding vows seriously

“In sickness and in health”

He meant every word

Knowing what he promised

He’s never off duty

On call twenty-four hours a day, every day

Not only her husband and companion

But her carer and her nurse

Sometimes he watches as she sleeps

Soothing her with gentle words when the nightmares come

Holding her as convulsions wrack her slender frame

Smoothing her hair back from her troubled brow

He watches as she bathes

Not in lechery, but in concern

In case she slips under the water again

As she has done so often before

His gentle hands comfort

When meltdowns threaten

Caressing her back into a state of calmness

When nobody else ever could

His wife, his patient, his companion and lover

She always knows what he does for her

And yet she can’t tell him what he means to her

Because there are no words

That’s so beautifully expressed, and so moving. Emotion has never come easily to me, but your poem makes my eyes moist.

The free-form works perfectly, letting your words tell the story at full power, unweakened by the artificiality and distraction of rhyme, metre or other imposed style.

    Andrew.

    • Thank you Andrew; I like to write as and when I feel – I hate having to plan and arrange poetry.

D has always been wonderful to me; I needed him to know how grateful I am and how much I love him.

  5. This is a beautiful poem. It is so easy to take our partners for granted and forget all those little things they do for us. Well done!

  7. Would you mind if I shared it in my fb group?

It’s beautiful beyond words — still, you found the words.
